Trip Switched from Nehalem to the Nestucca (class 2 section)

About this event

Trip Report:

We took out 4 mi below Blaine at Wolf Creed Rd. A closer takeout is at Borba Rd 3 mi below Blaine, due to length of the trip. All boaters would have preferred to take out at the closer bridge.

Flow was about 1100, we did before at 1000. Both of these levels were good. Could go a little higher, but don't go below 900. The lower part below Blaine needs more water because it is more spread out.

"Z" rapid - just upstream from Blaine - some feel that it is a class 3. I still think it is a class 2 if you take a hard left and not go over the flat rock at the top and into the hole. It is much like Carnivore on the packsaddle run.

Near the end of the trip, there was a very powerful surf wave with a huge eddy service. It is prime for those who like to surf, even great for just doing peel outs too.

Upper part was less technical at the higher water level. The higher water level made 'Z rapid' harder and swims longer.

On all islands near start of the run, the outside bend was always the best choice.

Much of the upper part is class 2+. This run is for a class 2+ boater, not a class 1 and 2 boater. This run makes for a great club trip. The area seems safe for parked cars. No portages, bad wood, apparent undercuts or other such dangers. In some places, lots of hitting rocks if you swim.

Some electronic navigation devices do not have Blaine in the right place, so some boaters got messed up looking for the meet up spot.
