Deschutes River, Wickiup to Wyeth Class 1
SS IV #185 9 miles of stunning Central Oregon. Smell of the High Desert, Pines, Sage, and abundant wildlife blend with the scene of a cool smooth flowing river with steady reservoir fed flow. Yes the Deschutes has areas where ancient lava flows create dangerous rapids, but in between Natures Fist (Rapids) are areas where novice and flat water paddlers will feel full comfort. We will launch and takeout totally avoiding rapids. The Deschutes is rather channelized in this area and moves you along at a good pace without any significant hazards. This paddle is a few hours drive, so camping is recommended. A dozen FS and BLM campgrounds are nearby.
To be upfront, I am supporting a small Scout Troop from Albany on a Deschutes Camping Paddle. I know areas of FS land at Wickiup Reservoir where free camping is possible and extend a welcome to WKCC to share our campfire. Intermingled camping we cannot do for youth protection reasons, but side by side campsite will be OK.
Per participants input a second Deschutes paddle on Saturday 8/31/2019 in proximity to Sunriver can be selected. Register for this paddle at WKCC website to receive Email with detailed information about the launch, shuttle, takeout, and free camp site.
