Willamette River - Class 1 with a possible hazard to avoid
Short notice; sorry.
I will be paddling a section of the upper Willamette on Sunday, 27 May. Please note; this will be a paddle trip, not a float trip. You will need to paddle the whole way, and it will help if you have a faster boat like a sea kayak or fast canoe. I will be in a glass canoe.
Details on the actual section are in flux; the trip will be between 12 and 19 miles and be somewhere between Coburg and Corvallis.
While there are no rapids over Class 1, there is a known hazard at Blue Ruin Island. If you join this trip, you need adequate boat control to avoid the hazard as it could be fatal if you miss the line.
Possible put-in/take-out locations include:
Marshall Island Access
Harrisburg
McCartney Park
Irish Bend County Park
Peoria Park
Crystal Lake Boat Ramp
Blue Ruin Island is above Harrisburg. The river has a very nice character in the upper sections; dredging stopped at Harrisburg when there was commercial river boat traffic. Norwood Island is below Irish Bend, and if we paddle that section, we will stop and take a little hike and possibly see some old friends who are camping there. It's a decent lunch stop too.
