North Santiam, Mehama to Stayton Class 2

About this event

In this section the Santiam is still in the mountains and the stream is narrow and sassy. About mid trip the river emerges into the Willamette Valley, widens and presents as a Class 1 moving water paddle the rest of the way. This paddle has a diversion weir to portage, it is done via a wooden ramp. A paddler will need some dexterity and balance to perform the wet (out of boat) portage. This paddle is suitable for learners who have boat control and are able to obtain their desired line. Shorter maneuverable boats are desirable. The river will present as very cold snowmelt coming out the bottom of a reservoir. Both the Launch and takeout are developed and easy.
