Join friends for an afternoon paddle of the mid/upper-McKenzie, starting at 1:00pm on Sunday, July 28. Put in at McKenzie Bridge. Around 10 miles total. The run starts out with its most challenging rapids, then mellows out as we travel down the river. Yet there are still harder lines, play spots, or surf opportunities for those who like to slow down and seek those out. The great water, pretty scenery, and the deepening shadows of the afternoon sun all make this a lovely run. Although this is not a class 3 run, there are a number of challenging spots, and the first 1-2 miles are very busy and rocky--this section in particular requires solid basic technical skills. Paddlers must have solid directional control of boats to avoid hazards (for example, hazardous strainers), and some larger holes/rocks. This run is not for beginners. The water is very cold, so proper cold-water gear--a dry suit or wet suit--is vital and required. Sign up via the WKCC website. Specific meet up details will be sent to those who are signed up on the day before the event. Please email me if you have any questions! Patrick

A first time for us exploratory paddle of a strand of the Willamette which is near Peoria, the Albany Channel should present similar to a Slough of 4 miles length, + 2 miles of the main channel getting on & off the Albany Channel. Total paddle about 6 miles, with the Takeout being at Peoria. This paddle will be docile water, and is suitable for learners & newbies. Expecting a lot of slack water, long hard boats having glide are desirable. Register for this paddle to receive an Email Friday evening with details about the Launch, Shuttle, and Takeout.

We call this section the "Lebanon Town Run" Launching on the S Santiam just above Lebanon, with a takeout on a private property gravel bar about 3 miles below Lebanon, one of my favorite sections of river in the weeknight paddle series. The river dances and splashes a little on a half dozen gravel bars, maintains decent flow without slack pools. This is an excellent paddle for learners and newbies. The launch has a long portage, we have wheeled dollies to help with this. The takeout is gentle and easy. Register for this paddle to receive an Email Tuesday evening with details about the Launch, Shuttle, and Takeout.

9 miles of a calm, moving section of the Deschutes through the high desert canyon and Warm Springs Reservation. SS #184 (first 9 miles). Excellent section for beginners with a few scattered riffles and little to no wood. Shade is scarce, but a great section for voluntary swimming and self-rescue practice. Expect to see the wild horses on river left as we go through the Warm Springs reservation. Paul Radke has volunteered a carpool from Tangent for paddlers & boats. Leaving Friday afternoon, camping Friday night at Mecca Flats BLM CG, returning Saturday evening to Tangent. Option for 2nd day trip on the Maupin section (see separate post) would require a second night camping. Please contact Paul to coordinate carpool if you wish to ride with him: 541-220-1764 radkepdx@gmail.com There are several fees required including river permit, shared camping expense, paid shuttle. Expect approximate per person expense of $25-35.

This 11-mile stretch is the classic day section through Maupin, with big waves. SS#184. There are several class III rapids with the big 3: Wapinitia, Boxcar and Oak Springs Rapids. This is pool drop with big waves and low technicality of moves. If you flub up, there is a nice calm pool of water to recover. Very little wood, deep fluffy water with big waves. Oak Spring rapid flushes out through rocky ridges that require some technical maneuvering at low water and less desirable to swim. I will be rowing a raft and can offer 3-4 additional folks a ride on the raft. I am able to loan duckie, or another raft if anyone is confident rowing. Contact me with questions. Combine this day with Aug 10, Class I Deschutes (see separate post) for a full weekend on the Deschutes. Due to the need to secure the permits and any campsites, please register and or cancel by Aug 7th. There are several fees required including river permit, tribal fees for use of launch and take out, shared camping expense, paid shuttle (maybe). Expect approximate per person expense of $30-35.
