Join friends on the gorgeous upper Metolius, on Saturday, July 12, to paddle from right above the first gorge through Candle Creek, twice. Those who are interested can meet the afternoon before (Friday) to camp together, and scout the river as interested. Please note that we will do the run TWICE! In both runs we will put in right above the first gorge, then paddle to the end of Candle Creek. A quick lunch/snack-break between runs. Note that: 1) Individuals will have the option of taking out right before Candle Creek each time—this last rapid probably being the hardest of the run, and the most consequential in case of a swim. 2) Individuals can skip the second run, however they should plan to help with shuttles before taking off, or bring a good book so that they can wait at the takeout (a campground), etc. This run is class 3, with some busy and rocky sections, some of these steep and fast, sometimes with large waves, large boulders/holes, or challenging features. Paddlers need solid directional control of boats to avoid hazards (for example, hazardous strainers), and some larger holes/rocks. Paddlers must have previous experience with class 3 rapids. See more info in Soggy Sneakers, run #168. It may be necessary to portage wood 1-2 times. The water is VERY cold, so proper cold-water gear--a dry suit and warm layers--is vital. Air temperatures in morning can be quite cool. Pogies recommended. Sign up via the WKCC website. Specific meet-up details will be sent to those who are signed up, in the days before the event. We are hoping for good air quality, but we will make adjustments if smoke is heavy on the day of the paddle. Please email me if you have any questions! Patrick

>10 miles of splashy moving water, in this section the river begins to emerge out of the mountains, it flattens a little and presents as splash and dance without the harsher standing waves. There are few pools of slack, it pretty much keeps flowing. There is a weir to portage above Stayton, below this point the river water is weird. You will need a boat that is durable and maneuverable. This is a suitable paddle for a Learner having boat control skill. Both the launch and takeout are developed and easy. Register for this paddle to receive email Friday evening with details about the Launch, Shuttle, and Takeout.

This paddle is the "Moving Water" offering for our Club gathering. The Takeout for this paddle will deliver you to Hendricks Park which is the location of our club gathering and picnic in the afternoon. While not true White Water, this is a sassy moving water section with some splash. It is marginally suitable for a beginner, you will need boat control to obtain your line and stay off obstacles. You need a boat that is maneuverable and durable. This paddle with have a large attendance of seasoned paddlers with skills to help should an upset occur, upsets in the past have been scant on this section. Distance about 9+ miles. Both the Launch and Takeout are developed and easy. Register for this paddle to receive an Email Friday evening with details about the Launch, Shuttle, and Takeout.

This trip will be one of the whitewater options for the club rendezvous celebrating the WKCC 50th anniversary. This section is for intermediate to advanced paddlers. It‘s fast, nearly continuous Class 2 with several larger rapids. There are lots of waves, small eddies and options for surfing, making this a fun run in hard shell kayaks and IKs. Suitable for advanced canoeists and SUPs with extensive Class 2/3 whitewater experience. For those in a hard shell kayak, a good roll is strongly advised, as swims can be long due to the fast current.
